Matthew 22:37-39
“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
3 Ways to Lead People to Jesus in Our Everyday Life
There are lots of places I go every day. I work from home, but I’m constantly on the move. A few of the places I usually frequent include coffee shops, running errands (grocery stores, Amazon returns—oops!), Target, friends’ houses, and, of course, my home. I am also constantly interacting with people throughout the day in these places—friends, strangers, family, clients, co-workers, and so many more!
My point is this: we are consistently in the same places and interacting with the same people. We are a well-oiled machine here in America with our routines and busy schedules. Don’t get me wrong—routines and schedules aren’t always bad things, but when we decide to be present in the moment with the people we most often interact with, I think something special can come of that.
In the New Testament, Jesus gives very clear instructions on how we are to go about our lives. In the verse above (Matthew 22), Jesus gives us two commandments: the first is to love God, and the second is to love others. He also goes on to tell us to go and make disciples in the Great Commission in Matthew 28! Loving God and others is the foundation for making disciples—when people see Christ’s love in us, they are drawn to Him
So, we have these instructions—but how do we live them out every day? In the coffee shops? In our businesses? With our clients? You may be wondering, Is that even possible or professional to bring faith into my daily life?
Here are three simple ways that I know will make a difference in leading people to Jesus in your everyday life:
1) Talk About Him
If you have a really close friend, you probably aren’t afraid to talk about that friend to a co-worker, right? Sounds cheesy, I know. But take a second and think about it—when is the last time you brought up Jesus or even your faith to your co-workers?
When Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are the number one priority in our lives, they automatically seep into every aspect of who we are and what we think about. Whatever is going on in your life, your faith plays a part. What are the blessings you are experiencing, or the good you see in the difficult times? Next time you’re chatting with your barista or a co-worker, mention how your faith has shaped your day or helped you handle stress
2) Listen to People. They Want to Be Seen and Heard.
Often, people just need someone to talk to. Think about someone in your life whom you consistently see who may be a bit lonely, down, or frustrated with life. Jesus took the time to sit down with people like this in the New Testament. He ate dinner at their houses—He took the time to just listen. It’s really not hard, but it can make the biggest difference in someone’s life. Offer to pray for them in that moment—it might surprise you how open they are.
3) Watch Your Character
We all make mistakes, but we have to remember that we are representing someone greater than ourselves. When we are leaders in our communities, people are watching how we love, serve, and lead others. They are looking to see if we have integrity. They are looking to see if we honor others. Ultimately, they are looking at our character, and people form judgments about our faith based on our actions.
It’s not necessarily fair, but it’s true! Where are you falling short lately? Take a look, take a breath, and restart. His mercies are new every morning.
To Conclude
At the end of our busy days, I think we would all benefit from adding these three actions into our routines. It’s easy to drift away from our faith because all we have to do is nothing. So, let’s be proactive. Let’s lead well. Pray more. Read our Bibles. Do the little things to be more like Christ and lead others to Him.
